Sparrow Citizen Scientist

Is mapping the bird population across the country the responsibility of only a handful of scientists? Birds and animals are an integral part of our environment and its our pride and our responsibility to work towards their safe future. This includes mapping birds, feeding them, providing them a safe environment, treating injured birds and stopping or reporting bird trade. That makes you a Citizen Scientist.

Monitor Sparrows and other Common Birds.

Be a Citizen Scientist and help NFS collect vital information on the presence and absence of common birds like House Sparrows. It is easy since the observations will take only about fifteen minutes and you can enter the data in the system as and when you want. This information will help in filling vital scientific gaps that now exist.

Help sick and injured birds

We often get calls about the correct way to treat sick and injured birds that need immediate medical help. However, we at NFS don’t have the skill to nurse sick birds. So, we have begun collecting data on people who can treat birds and bird hospitals in cities across India. You can help us collect more such information so that no town or city in India goes unrepresented! Make sure you send information only about genuine organizations about whom you are sure.

Ban catapults

What is a weapon? Something that can injure or kill. Catapults kill millions of birds in our country and still, the Wildlife Act of India doesn’t recognize it as a weapon. NFS is working to get the catapult banned in the country. You can send the petition to the various office holders. Also send us information if you see catapults being sold in the market. The sale of catapults increases during the seasons of melas and festivals in India.

Participate in the Bird of Month program

The aim to Bird of Month is to celebrate the avian jewels of nature which are found around us. It aims to inspire people not only to photo-document them but also take an active part in their conservation and habitat creation.

Help stop wildlife trade.
Time to think out of the cage.

Pet trade is one of the most serious threats to birds. Millions of birds are sold in the market only to be caged for life. As a Citizen Scientist you can collect information about the locations where the birds are sold and in what quantity so they can be rescued. Your vital information will also help in getting information about the birds featuring in wildlife trade. A simple and bird-friendly way to enjoy birds from close quarters is to install nest boxes and bird feeders. This not only helps in a healthy population of birds but also allows you to watch birds from close quarters. This is what we call, think out of the cage!

Become an NFS Volunteers

We can never guess the state of our country’s birds unless we monitor their population. To do that, we at NFS need your support. We request individuals, families, schools, universities and corporate houses to volunteer for the Common Bird Monitoring program. You can also volunteer in special ways: shutterbugs can send in photographs; teachers can spread awareness among students and artists can send in their bird illustrations.
